How to play Bluetooth speakers in sync
Updated 31 October 2026
A Bluetooth speaker turns a phone or laptop into a proper speaker in no time. Allsono keeps it in time with the rest, as long as you connect it to the right device.
Why Bluetooth lags behind
A Bluetooth speaker plays the sound 100 to 300 milliseconds after the device it is connected to, and that differs per speaker. Allsono reads that delay from the device and starts the speaker exactly that much earlier.
How to connect a Bluetooth speaker
- Connect the speaker over Bluetooth to a device that will play along as a speaker: a second phone, a Mac or an iPhone.
- Make another device the source.
- On the source, tap "Use as speaker" next to the device with the speaker.
- Does the speaker still sound slightly ahead or behind? Adjust it with "Fine-tune": if it runs ahead, choose +; if it runs behind, choose −.
Not on an Android phone that is the source
As the source, Allsono sets the phone's media volume to 0 so you don't hear the unsynced original. Most Bluetooth speakers take over that volume and then stay silent. Allsono shows a notice when that happens. Connect the speaker to a device that plays along as a speaker instead.
A Mac with a Bluetooth speaker stutters
- AirDrop, AirPlay and Handoff make a Mac's Wi-Fi jump briefly to another channel now and then. With a Bluetooth speaker attached, the Wi-Fi can then drop out for a second and the music stutters.
- Allsono notices and shows a notice, with a button to the right settings.
- Set AirDrop to No One and turn off AirPlay Receiver and Handoff in System Settings › General › AirDrop & Handoff.
- Rather not turn anything off? Play through the Mac's own speakers, or connect the Bluetooth speaker to a phone.
The first half minute
When a speaker with a long delay joins, or the network stalls, Allsono enlarges the buffer so every speaker can keep up. At that moment all speakers line up again once; you hear that as a very short break. After that it stays calm, and after a minute without trouble the buffer comes back down.
Try it yourself
Allsono is free for Mac, Android and iPhone.
